Overview

Team Leader Engineering - Structural (Building structures)

Lead the people. Strengthen the discipline. Deliver community structures that matter.

MSA is seeking a Team Leader – Structural Engineering to guide and grow a high-performing structural team focused on building structures for municipal clients, water and wastewater facilities, waterfront infrastructure, parks & recreation facilities, and tank design.

This role is for a structural leader who wants broader influence — someone ready to shape team culture, elevate project delivery, drive financial performance, and develop the next generation of engineers.

You won’t just manage projects. You’ll lead the people who manage them.

As Team Leader, you will:

  • Supervise and develop structural engineers and project managers

  • Oversee technical excellence and QA/QC across the team

  • Drive financial performance and workload planning

  • Partner with Service Line Leadership on growth strategy

  • Serve as a senior technical authority for complex building structure projects

This is a highly visible leadership role with influence across talent development, client relationships, and business performance.

Who we are:

For over 100 years, MSA has helped shape communities through engineering excellence. What began in 1919 with a single practitioner in Baraboo, Wisconsin, has grown into a robust firm of over 500 employee owners across the U.S.

Our purpose is simple: to make communities stronger, safer, and more sustainable. We believe in the power of relationships, trust, and doing the right thing — and we take pride in seeing our work come to life.

At MSA, we understand that great work happens when you contribute great value, and maintain a balanced life and career.  That’s why we offer:

  • Employee Ownership = True Investment: MSA is a 100% employee-owned firm. That means when you join our team, you’re not just doing a job — you’re building your legacy and sharing in the success of the firm.

  • A Culture of Mentorship and Collaboration: Work alongside a talented, cross-disciplinary team that values mentorship, professional development, and team success.

  • A flex time program that empowers you to manage your schedule — because life doesn’t always fit inside 9 to 5

  • A flexible work environment, including hybrid and remote options where possible, to support your productivity and well-being

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Conduct performance reviews and guide goal setting

  • Build bench strength and succession plans to support growth

  • Create an environment of accountability, coaching, and continuous improvement

You’ll lead through influence, clarity, and high standards — not micromanagement.

Technical & Project Oversight

  • Maintain deep expertise in structural building systems and applicable regulations

  • Provide QA/QC oversight aligned with MSA’s quality standards

  • Support project managers in scope, schedule, budget, and client communication

  • Serve as QC Manager or Project Manager on the team’s most complex structural projects

  • Provide strategic technical guidance for:

    • Municipal buildings

    • Water and wastewater structures

    • Waterfront and shoreline facilities

    • Parks & recreation buildings

    • Storage and process tanks

You ensure the team delivers technically sound, constructible, and high-quality structures.

Client & Market Engagement

  • Work directly with clients to secure contracts and win approvals

  • Support cross-selling efforts across disciplines

  • Respond to internal and external technical inquiries

  • Participate in proposals and public involvement processes

  • Serve as a trusted expert within your specialty

You help position the structural team as the go-to partner for complex public-sector building structures.

Business & Financial Leadership

  • Maintain accountability for team-level financial performance

  • Monitor project budgets, contracts, schedules, invoices, and scope

  • Collaborate on annual financial planning with Service Line Leadership
