About the Opportunity

At MSA, we believe that great engineering starts with great people. We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Graduate Engineer to join our Bridge Design Team in Des Moines IA. In this role, you’ll not only gain valuable technical experience but also be part of a collaborative culture that values mentorship, learning, and making a difference.

From start to finish, you’ll contribute to projects that directly improve the quality of life in the communities we serve across Iowa. You’ll be supported by a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about what they do and committed to helping you grow as an engineer.

Who we are:

For over 100 years, MSA has helped shape communities through engineering excellence. What began in 1919 with a single practitioner in Baraboo, Wisconsin, has grown into a robust firm of over 500 employee owners across the U.S.

Our purpose is simple: to make communities stronger, safer, and more sustainable. We believe in the power of relationships, trust, and doing the right thing — and we take pride in seeing our work come to life.

At MSA, we understand that great work happens when you contribute great value and maintain a balanced life and career.  That’s why we offer:

  • Employee Ownership = True Investment: MSA is a 100% employee-owned firm. That means when you join our team, you’re not just doing a job — you’re building your legacy and sharing in the success of the firm.

  • A Culture of Mentorship and Collaboration: Work alongside a talented, cross-disciplinary team that values mentorship, professional development, and team success.

  • A flex time program that empowers you to manage your schedule — because life doesn’t always fit inside 9 to 5

  • A flexible work environment, including hybrid and remote options where possible, to support your productivity and well-being

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Work side-by-side with experienced bridge designers who are eager to mentor and share their expertise.

  • Contribute to meaningful bridge projects that strengthen communities and improve everyday life.

  • Participate in all stages of project development — gaining a well-rounded perspective from design to construction.

  • Collaborate with a growing team of graduate and experienced engineers across multiple states, building a strong professional network.

  • Engage in site visits and client interactions that broaden your experience and help you see the impact of your work firsthand.

Qualifications

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures required.

  • Masters degree in Structural Engineering preferred.

  • Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD preferred.
  • FE exam passed (EIT certification required).

  • A strong desire to learn, grow, and contribute to a supportive team environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for improving communities through engineering.
