Overview

MSA has an opportunity for a full time Controller in either our Baraboo, Beaver Dam, Madison, or Milwaukee office locations. You would be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities and supervision of the Accounting Team, which primarily is based in Baraboo, WI. You will design, implement and monitor financial systems for recording, reporting and evaluating the financial performance of the organization. Hybrid working arrangements and flexible scheduling are options with this position.

Responsibilities

The Work You May Do

  • Effectively communicate with all levels within the organization.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and mentoring to direct reports and others, as needed.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts and make employment decisions (such as hiring, terminating, compensating, promoting) for direct reports.
  • Interact with senior leaders, directors, team leaders, and others concerning operational strategy and areas of responsibility; influence others to accept new practices, concepts and approaches with multiple levels of stakeholders.
  • Provide direction and assist with research regarding project financial status; work with project personnel to provide timely contract performance data and resolve financial issues; assist multiple Project Managers and staff on daily basis.
  • Assist Service Line Leaders, Team Leaders, and others in analysis of financial reports
  • Audit compliance with contractual requirements, which may include invoicing and reporting format, net fee projections and financial quality control.
  • Manage and coordinate accounting systems to monitor general ledger accountants, project costing, invoicing, payables, receivables and other related financial information; assist with development of accounting policies and procedures and manages the activities to comply.
  • Lead initiatives to improve project invoicing, and external and internal reporting processes; evaluates, develops and implements project accounting tools and procedures that enhance and improve overall results of assigned project(s), team(s), and/or service line(s).
  • Oversee project reserve and revenue recognition management & analysis; update monthly operations reporting documents; notify appropriate level of management with material variances; provide ad hoc financial research and analysis to internal clients; identifies areas of concern and provides recommendations and support of implementation.
  • Review journal entries, including monthly accruals, and account reconciliations; prepare, enter & post complex journal entries; consolidates financial reports; appraise the organization's financial position and issue monthly financial and operating reports. 
  • Participate in and support the firm's annual planning and forecasting processes; ensure the accurate reporting of financial results by profit and cost centers
  • Monitor costs incurred for compliance with Federal Government regulations including all Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) requirements.
  • Oversee the completion of external audits including direct engagements and audit requests of Federal and State governmental units, clients and other third parties.

Skills & Knowledge / Education & Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience required, 12+ preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification required
  • Proficiency with MS Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • Advanced technical accounting knowledge; advanced knowledge of financial statement analysis; accounting experience in A/E industry desirable
  • Previous experience with people management preferred
  • Must be well organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented and prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Requires personable and professional face-to-face, telephone and email communications; ability to work well independently and as part of team; collaborate with a broad range of individuals in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to properly handle sensitive and confidential information.
